A Kenmore washer can display a series of fault codes that can indicate a problem with the appliance. When these codes appear, it could require one or more solutions to clear the code from the display. The F2 fault code indicates a problem with the washer’s drain system, and you must troubleshoot the problem to determine how to fix the washer and clear the code.
The drain hose on a Kenmore washer should remain free of obstructions so the water drains from the washtub. A kink in the drain hose behind the washer can impede the flow of water from the washer. A drain hose inserted more than 4 1/2 inches into a floor or wall standpipe drain system can cause the water to siphon back into the washtub.
Your Kenmore washer uses a water-level pressure switch in the control panel to detect the level of water inside the washtub. You can find the pressure switch behind the control panel in top-load models or attached to the inside wall of front-load models. The round switch is approximately 3 inches in diameter with a clear or black plastic tube connected to the bottom or side of the switch. The tube runs from the pressure switch to the exterior washtub. As the water fills the washtub, it changes the air pressure inside the tube and lets the switch know when the water has reached a predetermined level. A stuck contact on the pressure switch can stop the advancement of the wash cycle and keep the water from draining. A few taps on the top of the switch with a screwdriver handle can release the contact and fix the problem causing the F2 error code.
A pump connects to the bottom of the Kenmore washtub and to the drain hose to pump the water from the washtub and out the drain. You must remove the front panel of front-load models to access the drain pump or lay top-load models on the ground to access the pump beneath the washtub. Electrical connections run from the control panel to the side of the pump to power it. Over time, the vibrations caused by the washer could loosen the wire connections and keep the pump from performing its job. Checking the pump for secure wire connections can clear the F2 error code on your Kenmore washer.
Small items can slip through the inner washtub into the outer tube and eventually make their way through the washtub drain into the drain pump filter on Kenmore front-load models. A buildup of small items and debris can clog the filter and keep water from passing through the pump and out the drain line. You can access the filter through the small door along the bottom front of your washer or by removing the front panel. The round filter housing connects to the side of the drain pump and opens by grasping the raised handle and twisting it counterclockwise. Cleaning the filter every two or three months can avoid the clogs that are causing the F2 error code to appear on your Kenmore washer’s control panel.
